COOPERATION CONTINUES BUT NO PROGRESS SEEN YET

Politics

Forth meeting of parliamentary commission on cooperation between CE and Armenia was held on September 9, 10 in Yerevan. CE representative Ursula Shlaykher said Armenians stick to the same values as other nations and pro-European leaning is seen in Armenia.

The issue on independent media was discussed at the meeting. Participants expressed hope that the new tender for broadcasting licence will give a chance to those companies stripped of license to resume broadcasting.

Ursula Shlaykher said she isn’t familiar with laws in this field, but intends to engage in this area. “In my country, company activity isn’t terminated if everything is done under the law”, she said. She hasn’t heard what happened with “Abovyan” TV. Head of parliamentary commission on foreign relations Hovhannes Hovhannissyan told his German colleague that president Kocharyan has taken control over the situation.

The meeting participants also called for death penalty abolishment and urged Ankara to open its border with Armenia.
