Constitution Day in Armnia

On July 5, Armenia marks the Constitution Day. On that day in 1995, the country's draft law was submitted to a nationwide referendum. At that time, the opposition considered the results of the referendum fraudulent, but according to official data, the Constitution was adopted. It was the first Constitution of independent Armenia. On November 27, 2005, a constitutional referendum was held in the country, during which the citizens approved the amendments to the main document. With these changes, the powers of the parliament expanded. The Constitution was also amended in 2015. Particularly, on December 6, 2015, a referendum on constitutional amendments took place, according to which Armenia switched to the parliamentary system of governance. Accordingly, no presidential elections will be held in Armenia, with a popular vote. The President will be elected by the National Assembly and Electoral Institute, formed as a result of the 2017 parliamentary elections. To note, according to Article 1 and Article 2 of the RA Constitution, the Republic of Armenia is a sovereign, democratic, social, legal state, and the Armenian government belongs to the people. By July 24 decision, July 5 is celebrated as a Constitution Day and declared non-working, by the decision made on July 24, 2001, based on the "Law on Holidays and Commemoration Days of the Republic of Armenia".
