European Commission: Catalonia's independence referendum is illegal
The European Commission considered illegal the referendum on Sunday's independence in Catalonia, which was accompanied by pressure by the Madrid authorities. "The referendum contradicts the Spanish Constitution," said Margaritis Sikhinis, the European Commission official spokesman, in Brussels.
