THE KHOJALU ANNEXATION 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Social

Today is the 10th anniversary of the Khojalu annexation. On February 26, 1992, the city was occupied by the Armenian army unions with support of the 366th Soviet motor-rifle regiment. The then president of Azerbayjan Ayaz Mutalibov later confessed that the Government were aware of the attack but the population wasn’t evacuated.

The Azeries insist that 613 people mainly women, children and the old were killed in Khojalu. But in fact, the peaceful population leaving the city was shot at the Aghdam border by military unions of the Azerbayjan People's Front. The latter wanted to get the president be responsible for the happenings and thus to resign.

The Khojalu incidents are still used for home policy aims. Lately a point was set to nominate the 26th February as the day of the Azeries’ genocide.
