LEVON TER-PETROSSYN HAS NO INTENTION TO STAND FOR ELECTION

Politics

Former Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrossyan has no intention to join the race for presidency. It became clear at the conference Armenian Nation-wide Movement held Thursday.

Such a decision disappointed Ter-Petrossyan loyalists. The Movement leadership member Alexan Arzumanyan didn’t answer all the questions former president’s supporters put to him.

Although the party has a goal of ousting Kocharyan considering this the only way to save the situation in the republic, at the same time it doesn’t put up any presidential candidate able to save the country.

There is still time before December 6 and it isn’t ruled out that the party will announce its support for one of presidential candidates.

“Republic” party as well as Armenian People Party was invited to the conference.

The party 13th conference expected to be a landmark event was instead turned into the clearing up of misunderstanding among the conference participants.

The head of “XXI Century” former party and now a member of the ANM board David Shahnazaryan criticised the party leadership in his speech blaming it for ill-organised and hurried staging of the conference. He said the event has been held at wrong time and was completely senseless. He was also unhappy about the fact that no candidate for presidential elections has been put up by the party. Moreover, the republic community, he said, was disoriented by the conference. Shahnazaryan accused the party leadership of passiveness saying it has no right to be passive. “We must introduce certain policy to guide people. Kocharyan’s Administration will reap the fruits of our inactivity”, Shahnazaryan said and proposed ANM activists to join the parliamentary fraction created by him. In fact, a definite split generated by discord among members is visible within the party.

One of the ANM ordinary members noted: “We are fighting each other instead of struggling against common foe”.

The ANM adopted a resolution condemning either home or foreign policy pursued by the republic current leadership. “Its short-sighted policy has led to ousting Nagorno-Karabakh from peace talk process. Kocharyan made negotiable Armenian territory of Meghri, putting in danger the country integrity”, the resolution said.

The ANM new board was elected at the end of the conference.
