Suren Abrahamyan, a member of the Hanrapetutyun (Republic) Party, says the persecution of Vartan Oskanian, a lawmaker of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), is politically motivated.

"I feel sorry for Oskanian. On the other hand, recalling his behaviour during the March 1 post-election clashes in Yerevan, I want him to feel on his skin whatever we have been feeling for ten years. Oskanian became a victim of the system created by [Armenia's second president] Robert Kocharyan. There are different opinions concerning Oskanian's persecution. One of the versions is that everything was well plotted by a wonderful director, a great scriptwriter. And if the director succeeds in his further endeavours, Serzh Sargsyan will be re-elected as president. Today the real candidate is Serzh Sargsyan," Suren Abrahamyan told reporters on Monday.

The member of the Hanrapetutyun party finds the cooperation between the country's first and second presidents illogical.

Asked whether his party will name a candidate for the 2013 presidential poll, Mr Abrahamyan said they still need to assess the situation. Similarly, they should consider the issue of supporting the candidate of the Armenian National Congress (HAK), if Hanrapetutyun does not field its candidate for the post.

"Power is not an end in itself for Hanrapetutyun. Presently, we are engaged in arranging our meetings. During the four years of our affiliation with the HAK we have been unable to hold separate meetings," he said.
