Palestinian envoy Riad Mansoor hoped that the resolution would receive adequate support. The resolution, which was presented to the Security Council by Egypt, was blocked by the US veto. Other 14 members of the Council were for the adoption of the resolution. The resolutions of the General Assambly do not have mandatory force but can bring political consequences. Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, said before the voting that, according to President Trump's recommendation, she would follow the voting process of all the countries and would report to the President "who voted against the USA." President Trump threatened to dicrease the economic support of those countries which did not support the decision on Jerusalem of the White House. "I liked Nikki's announcement at the UN, addressed to all those countries that take money from us and then vote against us at the Security Council, or, potentially, at the General Assambly. So, we are following the voting. Let them vote against us; we will only save money from it. We are indifferent," said President Trump. The opponents of Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel stated that it contradicted the US policy, according to which the status of Jerusalem should be determined as a result of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians.

The Palestinian side stated that the United States was no longer a reliable part of the peace process.

Donald Tramp's administration, in its turn, stated that it continued to adhere to the two-state approach and the embassy's location should not hinder the peace process.
