Serzh Sargsyan receives Secretary General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs

On December 11, Serzh Sargsyan received the Secretary General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs Paolo Cotta-Ramusino and Council Member of the movement Alexander Nikitin.

Greeting the guests the President of the Republic noted that he is well aware of the ideas, goals and the efforts of the movement participated by influential scientists, political and public figures to have a safer, more secure world without any weapons of mass destruction. Armenia, according to Serzh Sargsyan, highly esteems the efforts of the people directly involved in that process. Serzh Sargsyan noted that Armenia, conscientiously fulfilling its international obligations on non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, is involved in that process and emphasized that peace and stability are of vital importance for Armenia. In this context the President noted that Armenia does its best to keep the region away from wars and that’s the reason why Armenia always speaks about mutual concessions when it comes to Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement, believing that such conflicts can be settled only and only through negotiations.

Thanking for the reception and the President’s appreciation of the movement, Secretary General of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs Paolo Cotta-Ramusino assured that the movement does everything to ensure contact between peoples in various regions and simultaneously to have a world free of nuclear weapons. The Secretary General of the movement asked for Sargsyan’s consent and assistance to hold the World Conference of the Pugwash Movement on Peace and International Security in Yerevan in 2019. Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the idea of holding the conference in Armenia and expressed readiness to assist its organization in Armenia at high level.
