Recently, Leer (Germany) hosted the Open Championship of the SCHACH OPEN LEER chess tournament, which was also attended by seven promising Armenian chess players. Only Armenians, from other ethnic minorities living in Germany, participated in the tournament, having success. Chess player Ferdinand Hakobyan from the city of Launenburg took the 4th place in the B group, and Spartak Gevorgyan, from Bremen, took the fifth in A group. Other Armenian athletes, however, did not win prizes, but incentive prizes were awarded to them. Tovmasyan family, who is the only Armenian family living in Leer, came to support Armenian chess players. The family's father, Albert Tovmasyan, proudly mentioned that such participation could be the beginning of victories in that means of sports. "It is encouraging to me that though my family in Leer is the only Armenian family, we have all been able to present Armenian chess players in this tournament, who have succeeded," said Albert Tovmasyan.
