A group of environmentalists today held a protest in downtown Yerevan against the planned exploitation of the Amulsar gold mining project. They rolled down ‘a 70-ton golden ball’ along the city streets informing people of the possible consequences of the project. The group claims that the mine-exploiting company (Lydian International) envisages extracting 70 tons of gold from the area. “… And the Armenian Government has given its consent to the project that will destroy our nature. I think this ‘gold bullion’ can replace the dismantled statue of Lenin [at Republic Square] as it fully corresponds to value system that our authorities adhere to,” environmentalist Apres Zohrabyan wrote on Facebook.
