“Russian cannot become the second state language in Armenia. To do it, we must change the Constitution and hold a referendum and I think that our people will be wise enough to say ‘no’ to changes,” linguist Lavrenti Mirzoyan said today. He said it while commenting on the statement of Chairman of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin. The latter suggested that Armenian authorities grant the Russian language official status in Armenia and said in this case, Armenian-issued driver licenses will be recognized as valid in the territory of the Russian Federation. “The same thing can be demanded by the Chinese, the French, Iranians, etc. Let us consider the issue closed, but if our driving licenses are not valid in Russia, Volodino should remember the Vienna agreement. This is a violation of international standards,” the linguist said. “If we stand firm, our language will not be replaced with a driver's license,” said Artashes Martirosyan.
