“Naturally, it is difficult to exclude that none of the 337 prosecutors [in Armenia] has ever been involved in corruption, but if we reveal such a case, we shall be much stricter,” Armenia’s Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan told journalists today. Then he recalled a recent case when a prosecutor was arrested for taking bribe. Mr. Davtyan did not rule out more arrests in the system. Most of the recently arrested judges worked in marzes. Many say that judges in Yerevan judges enjoy personal immunity from civil suits irrespective of the quality of their work. “Where did you take this? Do you have any information about the arrested judges? Do they have patrons or not? There is no such thing, I assure you. If we have any evidence proving the corrupt activity of Yerevan-based judges and prosecutors, we shall punish them in the same way.” The prosecutor general called ungrounded all reports about political persecution against the members of the Sasna Dzrer group. “Do you know anyone in the group who was known for his political activity? If a person, who was once engaged in politics, is tried, it does not mean that the charges are leveled against him because of his political activity.”
