Economist: Remote communities might disappear (video)

Economist Vilen Khachatryan says consolidation of communities in Armenia is an effective move but the question is how it will affect our reality. On the one hand, we shall have an effective model; on the other hand, we have border communities which might face serious threats after enlargement. Any concentration can result in the disappearance of remote communities, increase in migration rates and sharp reduction in the number of population,” the economist told reporters on May 24. He insists that all these factors should be considered and it doesn’t matter at all whether the enlargement will cut the expenses or not. Moreover, the economist believes that the country should hold a referendum on the enlargement of communities to allow people express their opinion on the move. At the same time, Vilen Khachatryan has certain doubts that the referendum will show the true picture as ‘the authorities take referendums to the direction they want.’ In conclusion, the economist said that the consolidation of communities will have a mechanical character.
