The violence captured on camera outside the Turkish ambassador's residence on Tuesday was a "brutal attack on peaceful protesters," D.C.'s police chief said. Speaking at a Wednesday news conference, police chief Peter Newsham said: "Yesterday afternoon, we witnessed what appeared to be a brutal attack on peaceful protesters at the Turkish ambassador's residence." Newsham said 11 people and one police officer were injured. The protests came the same day President Trump met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey at the White House. The fighting was between Armenians and Turks. Supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, including his government security forces and several armed individuals, violently charged a group of Armenians outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence. The State Department confirmed on Wednesday that Turkish security personnel were involved in the clash. “We are concerned by the violent incidents involving protestors and Turkish security personnel Tuesday evening. Violence is never an appropriate response to free speech, and we support the rights of people everywhere to free expression and peaceful protest,” the State Department said in a statement. “We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.” The department said they will work with the United States State Department and United States Secret Service to "identify and hold all subjects accountable for their involvement in the altercation." The violence captured the attention of Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain. "This is the United States of America," McCain wrote on Twitter. "We do not do this here. There is no excuse for this kind of thuggish behavior." House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) on Wednesday sent a letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urging immediate action to hold individuals accountable for brutal attacks on peaceful protesters outside the Turkish Ambassador’s residence on Tuesday Mayor Bowser stated: "What we saw yesterday - a violent attack on a peaceful demonstration - is an affront to D.C. values and our rights as Americans. I strongly condemn these actions." “What we saw yesterday – a violent attack on a peaceful demonstration – is an affront to DC values and our rights as Americans,” said Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser in a statement issued earlier today. “I strongly condemn these actions and have been briefed by Chief Newsham on our response. The Metropolitan Police Department will continue investigating the incident and will work with federal partners to ensure justice is served.” "Unfortunately, this is not the first such episode and represents a troubling pattern - whether it was last year's event at Brookings Institute wherein Turkish presidential bodyguards and pro-Erdogan supporters violently tried to bar people from attending the think-tank event or Turkey's shameless support of Azerbaijan's ongoing ceasefire violations against Armenia and Artsakh, which included the ISIS-like mutilation of an elderly couple and the beheading of three Armenian soldiers,"  the Armenian Assembly of America said in a statement condemning the attack on peaceful protesters.
