May 1st is the International Workers’ Day. Gyumri’s “Lentex” company’s employees were celebrating the day. They marched from administrative area of the company to Vardanants Square, then to central park.
May 1st is celebrated in 142 countries. In 1886 American and Canadian workers organized a march, demanding 8 hours’ work schedule. As a result of dispersing the demonstration in Chicago 8 policemen and 4 protesters were killed and dozens of people were affected.
In 1889, the Second International Paris Congress, in memory of Chicago events, made a decision to hold annual rallies on May 1st. But for the first time it was celebrated in 1890.
