“The United States has to recognize the first genocide of the 20th century to help the people of Turkey,” U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman (D-CA), a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said as he called on the Congress to properly recognize the Armenian genocide of 1915. “Germany was able to understand its own history and become a powerful, prosperous and democratic country, where many people would like to live. Unlike Germany, Turkey continues denying the Armenian Genocide and is on its way to an extremist, authoritarian and Erdogan-style state,” Brad Sherman said. The congressman said he will not remain quiet as long as the U.S. House of Representatives recognizes the Armenian Genocide because genocide denial is the last step of the genocide. “Genocide denial is the last act of a genocide and the first step in the next genocide. It is our duty to honor and dignify those who lost their lives, to pay respect to their living relatives, and to ensure that these horrible events never happen again. There is no need to remind you that Hitler once convinced his subordinates that they can avoid responsibility for Holocaust just as the Ottoman Empire managed to avoid responsibility for the genocide.”
