“Sometimes we have to perform this or that piece of music and no one comes to listen it,” Conductor Edward Topchyan said in reply to the question why the Philharmonic Orchestra does not perform the works by contemporary composers. “There are such works which will cause the death of a dog if it eats them. No one comes to listen to them, even composers do not come,” Mr Topchyan added. The conductor says it is wrong to include only Armenian music in the repertoire of Opera House. “We do not have any work by Mozart or Rossini, only something vague by Puccini,” he said adding that nationalism must not emphasized in music. In his turn, Conductor Karen Durgaryan stressed the need to spread Armenian music around the world. “No one in the world knows Alexander Spendiaryan or Ghazaros Saryan. Few have heard about Aram Khachatryan. European stages became accessible to us after the collapse of the Soviet Union.”
