Although the reconstruction and modernization of Vernissage - a large open-air exhibition-market in downtown Yerevan – has been completed and artisans and craftspeople already exhibit their handicrafts in a more comfortable environment, they still cannot sell their works. The market mainly features a collection of different types of traditional Armenian art works and offers a wide variety of souvenirs in one location ranging from jewelry, wood carvings and paintings to old Soviet-era relics, rugs and embroidery. Carpet seller Vazgen Abgaryan says they have rugs and carpets from different regions of Armenia and Artsakh but they cannot sell them. The reason is that fewer tourists visit Armenia, it is an expensive country for tourists, and the locals do not want to buy our carpets. “I wish we had more clients from Armenia but our millionaires prefer to buy Turkish trash which can cause cancer,” said Mr Abgaryan. “We cannot sell anything because there are not tourists in the country. This country is more expensive than France, hotels are very expensive here,” he added.
