Khosrov Harutyunyan, a lawmaker from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), does not understand the officials who join the ranks of the opposition after leaving office. Talking to journalists on January 24, Harutyunyan spokes about the return of former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan and on his possible participation in Armenia’s upcoming parliamentary elections. “A lot of things are not clear to me. In 1992, when I had a disagreement with the political majority, I resigned as prime minister; therefore, if anyone in power has fundamental differences [with the authorities], the outcome is predictable to everyone. In this case, it looks questionable to me when someone in power suddenly becomes very critical of the government…” Mr Harutyunyan said on Jan. 24, adding that people themselves should evaluate such phenomena. Speaking about the newly formed alliances, the lawmaker said they could not and would not result in serious changes or ‘bring new quality’ to the parliament. “I think alliances are possible among those political forces that have ideological similarities. But we do not see it happen very often. Some alliances have short-term goals; for example, they seek to achieve success in the elections but their role in organizing the public life and bettering the quality of political domain remains insignificant.”
