It would be easier for children with special educational needs at schools, if relevant education had been received at kindergartens. What’s more, there would be no problems at schools, if all the kindergartens became inclusive, says psychologist Meri Martirosyan, who works at number 6 kindergarten. This institution is the only one in Alaverdi, where pre-school inclusive education is implemented. 15 out of 140 children of the kindergarten have special educational needs. “It’s very important that the basis be formed in kindergartens, as kids get used to such children starting from nursery,” says Meri Martirosyan. Of course, it has also its difficulties. “At that age children imitate, at the beginning it is very hard; parents get into a panic what that child is doing… But after one-two months, the child gets used to, and even helps the other child,” adds the psychologist. Children with special educational needs have attended number 6 kindergarten since 2008, when “World Vision” organization within the frames of already finished project carried out relevant activities. Speech therapist and psychologist work with the children. Teachers know the attitude towards the children with special educational needs should differ positively. “Last year a child with autism attended our kindergarten. The child was in a constant anxiety, but thanks to mutual work with the parents we achieved results. If at the beginning Davit didn’t want to come here, communicate with other children, gradually the situation changed. The children also helped him. The child started uttering sounds and became close to other children,” Elina Tamazyan, teacher at number 6 kindergarten of Alaverdi, told “A1+”. The changes are the result of the joint work of parents and all the specialists of the kindergarten. “During the whole day children are under the supervision of a teacher, but the speech therapist and psychologist constantly carry out supervision, and if there are some problems, they help,” adds the teacher. Cold winter does not affect the activities of the kindergarten. “Conditions inside are sufficient, it is warm in the rooms; we have a problem connected with windows. That is an urgent issue. We covered the windows with plastic, but the wind is still blowing. If we have Euro windows, we can save local heating,” says Elina Tamazyan. Bathrooms in the kindergarten have been repaired, but rooms and bedrooms need repair.
