Madan – a district in Armenia’s Alaverdi city, a witness to centuries-old friendship between Armenians and Greeks, was once a village lying 5 km away from Alaverdi. Today one can hardly meet Greeks here. The settlement has been buried in an unusual silence for many years. Every second house in Madan is locked. Most of the villagers have left the village in the last two decades. Twenty years ago, Madan had 800 Greek residents; today only 6 of them live in the district. Those are elderly people who spend most of their time in Greece. Grandpa Fila remembers that Greeks began to leave Armenia in the 90s. The economic crisis in the country and longing for their homeland did not allow them to return to Madan again. The Greek settlement is left neglected with its dilapidated church and houses.
