All families that became homeless as a result of the devastating earthquake that ripped through Armenia in 1988 will be provided with housing, Tanya Arzumanyan, Head of the Housing Policy and Communal Iinfrastructure Department at the State Committee of Urban Development, said on Tuesday. She added that under a state program, only homeless people in Gyumri will be provided with homes in 2017. As of 2014, 5400 beneficiaries were registered under the state sponsored housing program in the disaster zone. 4170 of them received apartments and financial assistance in 2014. Forty-three families received apartments in 2015 and another 287 in 2016. A total of 550 families are on the waiting list. “Under the 2017 budget, 560 million drams will be allocated to solve the housing problem of homeless families in Gyumri,” she said in conclusion.
