Diaspora Armenians face the threat of assimilation (video)

The number of Armenian communities in the Middle East has been declining in the last 30 years. President of Armenian Benevolent General Union (ABGU) Perch Sedrakyan says 80 percent of them have either dispersed or become estranged from their Armenian roots. “The new generation walks away from their identity and roots. This is a serious concern. New emigrants preserve their national identity for at least 1-2 generations whereas those who settle in the United States, Europe and Russia lose their identity altogether,” Perch Sedrakyan said during a press conference organized within the framework of AGBU 110th anniversary celebrations. He stressed that if the Diaspora weakens it will lose its importance and cannot support the homeland. “If we do not take measures in the next 5-10 years and bring part of them closer to their roots, they will coalesce with other nations,” Perch Sedrakyan stressed. The ABGU President says the strongest anchor is having a powerful country. “Our main concern is to strengthen the economic situation in Armenia. We need to have a powerful country to instill pride in the coming generations. Our efforts in the next years should be directed towards our homeland,” he added.
