“Women’s participation in politics and economy is very low in Armenia,” Lilit Asatryan, President of Armenian Young Women's AssociationNGO, said on December 2. She recently returned from London where she participated in the“Women of the Future” international forum Lilit Asatryan says if a country wants real changes, the proportion of women in parliament should be greater than 30 percent. “Unfortunately, we are very far from this figure. The reason for our shortcomings and failures, I think, is that women are not involved in politics and economy,” she said. The meeting was also attended by UK Ambassador to Armenia, H.E. Ms Judith Margaret Farnworth. The latter said they always assist Armenia in drafting and developing laws relating to women. “Education, especially education of women is very important. Women’s participation in politics and economy promotes establishment of broader and deeper democracy. In Armenia, women make up 50 percent of the population, or a little more, so their representation in parliament should be 20 percent, whereas today it is only 10 percent. Of course, each person decides who he/she wants to vote for but I would like to know the percentage of women in the next parliament," she said. Ms Judith Farnworth added that the UK has female queen and prime minister but that is not enough for them. “Women make up more than 30 percent in our parliament, their presentation in large businesses is 20 percent but we are not satisfied with these figures. We are trying to develop a strategy in order to ensure balance," the Ambassador said in conclusion.
