Homelessness continues to be one of the unsolvable problems in Armenia’s Spitak city. A total of 1000 families are still homeless in the city which was ravaged by the 1988 earthquake. The Soviet Union compensated (in the Russian rouble) the families who lost housing in the 1988 earthquake but the citizens were unable to spend the money because their bank accounts were frozen. What is the state doing today to solve the problem? A1+ Company has talked to Gagik Sahakyan, Mayor of Spitak city. “We have applied to the government and president of the country many times but so far we have received no reply from them. As long as the construction of state apartments is not finished, we shall not address the issue,” he said adding that the construction is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Over 4000 people were killed in the massive earthquake that rocked Spitak city on December 7, 1988. Tens of thousands of people were left homeless in the result of the earthquake that measured to have a magnitude of 10 on the Richter scale.
