Heavy clashes shook the Syrian city of Aleppo on October 24, as heavy fighting resumed after the end of a three-day ceasefire declared by government ally Russia, Voice of America reports citing the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The source says fierce fighting broke in several parts of the city at a time. Particularly, strikes and artillery fire hit the city’s eastern districts yesterday after heavy overnight clashes along the front line that divides the city’s government-held west from the opposition-held eastern neighbourhoods. The opposition forces are going to attack the government forces and have urged the civilian population to leave the area controlled by the government troops. On Friday, the United Nations had to stop the planned humanitarian activities and the process of evacuating the wounded civilians from the rebel-held areas. According to the UN, over 250 000 civilians need humanitarian aid in the western part of Aleppo and hundreds of wounded people need medical aid. Aid trucks of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have been stranded for several weeks on the border with Turkey, waiting for security guarantees to deliver humanitarian assistance to the conflict zone.
