Will our Opera House become La Scala? (video)

There was a time when the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiarian was the most important place of entertainment for Yerevan citizens, and tickets were difficult to obtain.The hall was always overcrowded, and many had to sit on the steps at the entrance, with tickets in their hands. People did not go to the opera in casual clothes; they dressed up according to the occasion and tried to look their best. Famous and popular artists ‘shone’ on the stage and the orchestra was led by renowned conductors.  One of them was famous Armenian singer and People’s Artist of the USSR Tatevik Sazandaryan. A commemorative program marking the 100th anniversary of the singer kicked off at her favorite Opera House on Tuesday. The program includes screening of archival materials and photos. Also, Tigran Tchukhajyan’s ARSHAK II opera dedicated to the famous singer will be performed. “I have a desire to better and improve everything in the Opera House for the benefit of our artists and audience,” renowned pianist and conductor Constantine Orbelian once said to journalists. Time will show whether his desire has become a reality or not. In fact, today we have a young audience waiting for a new dawn of our opera.
