President of Armenian Union of Composers Aram Satyan does not agree with the prime minister’s statement that cultural figures should not ask the state for money, instead they should pay taxes to the state. “If you want to receive, you should first invest. You need to understand the inner workings of culture. It is a wrong way of thinking,” Mr. Satyan said today. He says the state is paying little or no attention to creative unions. He remembers the salary he received during the Soviet era. “One could buy a car with the money,” he stressed. “The remuneration of artists is negligible today. I would like our ministers to receive 50 000-60 000 drams a month and live on the money,” Mr. Satyan said. President of the Writers' Union of Armenia Edward Militonyan pins great hopes on the new minister of culture. "Any change in cultural policy instills new hopes,” he said. Mr. Militonyan says we can expect good results if knowledgeable professionals are hired by the Ministry. “Not a single minister can decide alone what is to be done by the agency he heads.” The President of the Writers' Union of Armenia also attaches importance to the publication of works of old and the new authors.
