Starting from this year Yerevan will also have its chess open. Vice President of Yerevan Chess Federation Norayr Kalantaryan informs that the tournament is included in the program of Erebuni-Yerevan celebrations and hereafter will be held every year. “Such opens are held in different cities, especially in Baku. We are happy to note that more GMs and high level chess players will perform in Yerevan than in the capital of the neighboring country.” The specialist notes that this tournament is of high significance especially to our chess players. “We have large number of talented chess players, who lack experience in participation in international tournaments, as it is very expensive for them to leave abroad. In this tournament they will be given a chance to face strong rivals. Besides, in case of successful performance, many of them may meet the norms of international master or Grandmaster of chess and be awarded those titles. Chess opens also promote development of tourism, as huge number of chess players and chess lovers arrive from abroad,” summed up Norayr Kalantaryan. To note, Yerevan Chess Open will be held on October 1-18 in Armenia’s chess academy. At present about 130 chess players have submitted applications for participation, including 23 GMs.
