Mines and Safe Behavior in Tavush: ICRC Explains Dangers to Children Yerevan (ICRC) – In border villages of Tavush Region of Armenia residents often underestimate the threats posed by mines and unexploded devices. To address the issue, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) designed a special learning activity in cooperation with the Armenian Red Cross Society. Already for two years, the partners have been organizing information sessions to explain the dangers of mine-related incidents and to inform people how to remain safe in case of shelling. Last year, volunteers of the Tavush branch of the Armenian Red Cross ran 27 sessions to residents of 16 villages, most of them – teachers and schoolchildren. Prior to conducting such seminars, the volunteers received training provided by the experts of the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise. In addition, some 6,500 families were handed thematic leaflets, and posters were put up in their villages. In 2016, a total of 32 information sessions will be organized in the 17 villages of Tavush. The project already recommenced in July and will continue until the end of October.
