The number of candidates for president of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has reduced by one. According to Spanish media, Ángel María Villar Llona (President, Royal Spanish Football Federation) is going to withdraw his candidacy because he is busy with the elections of President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. If the news is confirmed, two candidates will remain for the position of UEFA President - candidates are Aleksander Čeferin (President, Football Association of Slovenia) and Michael van Praag (President, Royal Netherlands Football Association). The election will take place at the 12th Extraordinary UEFA Congress on 14 September in Athens. The candidates for the Presidency will be subject to an eligibility check, conducted by the Review Committee of FIFA due to the fact that the UEFA President automatically becomes a FIFA Council vice-president. The post has been vacant after former UEFA President Michel Platini quitted the organization last year for his involvement in a corruption scandal along with former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
