NATO doesn’t want a clash, NATO is not going to arouse problems for neighboring countries, but the member states of the Union has a security issue and the population of about 1 billion has presented a claim for ensuring security. Expert at the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs (AIISA) Gevorg Melikyan has come to such a conclusion after the NATO summit in Warsaw. “We are speaking about the recent problems of Finland and Sweden, the Baltic countries with Russia. Wales Summit in 2014 adopted much stricter approaches against Russia, but NATO still hoped that Russia would surrender, would try to take certain steps. In two years, NATO countries understood that Russia is getting more aggressive,” says Mr Melikyan. The expert highlights another notable fact; NATO-EU new rapprochement took place; it seems that the disagreements existing between them are getting solved. He says that two geopolitical unions have always differed; NATO highlights the military component in the actions, unlike the EU, which aims at solving the issues using milder measures. According to the assessment of Gagik Melikyan, with Warsaw summit, NATO made it clear to Russia that it returns to the old method- deterrence, “We speak about the nuclear deterrence during Cold war, when the Soviet Union and the West had relevant nuclear base and were able to restrain each other and didn’t allow aggression.” NATO will not wait anymore to see how Russia will behave. Nevertheless, according to the expert, NATO leaves open doors giving a chance to Russia to become more constructive, which isn’t approved by the member states of the union bordering Russia, as those countries expect stricter actions against Russia. According to the political expert Aghasi Yenokyan, Russia has had some success during Warsaw summit, as it succeeded in preventing formulation of the NATO Black Sea group, “Bulgaria rejected the project, and it couldn’t be formed only with Romania and Turkey. As a result of it, NATO lost the chance to strengthen the naval forces of Georgia and Ukraine.” Aghasi Yenokyan doesn’t expect ‘cold war’ in NATO-Russia relations, “There is a policy of silent deterrence instead of it, which is expressed by usual, missile, sometimes nuclear armaments.” Professor at Sorbonne University Hayk Martirosyan rules out the development, when Russia will attack any member state of NATO, as well as any opposite development. “NATO and Russia resort to confrontation giving nothing, instead of it they could unite against number one international threat.” Hayk Martirosyan draws the attention to the discussions relating to Nagorno Karabakh, when NATO, in fact, recognized the territorial integrity of Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan, “It means that first of all NATO recognizes the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, which implies certain policy. It would be better if NATO refrained from expressing any viewpoint, especially during this tense situation.”
