Armenian lawmaker Stepan Margaryan predicts ‘a chaotic situation’ during the upcoming elections in the country. The vice-chairman of the newly-formed Hamakhmbum (Consolidation) Party says there will be the problem of providing a stable majority. “Candidates in party-lists vying for seats will garner votes for themselves and their parties so that no one can say later that he has brought more votes than others. It seems there is something fair here but if we study closer we can see the risks: for example 20 people in the same polling station may garner votes using their financial resources, the help of district authorities and administrative levers. This will add to the votes of the party. Of course, this sounds fair, and we cannot deny it,” Stepan Margaryan told reporters. He says if all candidates are given equal opportunities during the elections, everyone will benefit from it, but elections are held in a different way in Armenia. “Many do not have administrative levers. The head of the village is not affiliated with your party and cannot help you. On the other hand, law enforcement agencies and local officials interfere with the elections in favour of their candidate.” Mr Margaryan says the system should boost the role of political parties which is not the case in Armenia.
