Georgia abolishes compulsory military service

The Minister of Defence of Georgia Tinatin Khidasheli has signed a decree to abolish compulsory service in the armed forces. “One of my promises was to abolish compulsory conscription. Service in the armed forces of Georgia is a worthy endeavor, and everyone should want to serve in the armed forces. No one will be forced to serve in the army against his will,” the Minister said signing the order in the presence of journalists. Tinatin Khidasheli added that her decision will remain in place so long as she was Defence Minister however if any of Georgia’s future Defence Ministers decided to restore compulsory military service, it would be up to them. Currently military service in Georgia is compulsory for male citizens from 18 to 27 years who do not have deferment or exemption from service.
