May 31 is the World No Tobacco Day. In Armenia, compared to previous years, the number of smokers hasn’t changed significantly. 53 percent of men, 7-8 percent of women and 6 percent of teenagers are smokers in our country. Alexander Bazarchyan, Director of National Institute of Health, thinks legislative changes are needed for decreasing those figures, “In our country, our weakest point is that smoking isn’t prohibited in public places. For example in Russia and Ukraine after the implementation of this method the statistics has changed significantly.” On the World No Tobacco Day, every year an issue is chosen. This year attention is paid to the packaging of tobacco as an efficient method of fighting against smoking. There is a proposal to make the packaging of tobacco the way, which doesn’t contain elements of advertising. Again touching upon the research, Alexander Bazarchyan noted that the number of teenage smokers is better in our country compared to the neighboring countries. By the way, 9 percent of teenage smokers are boys and 1 percent is girls. As for the illnesses caused by smoking, according to statistics, 80 percent of people having lung cancer are smokers.
