Armenian chess players started their performance at the Moscow Open with victories. Armenian Grandmasters Tigran L. Petrosyan and Robert Hovhannisyan beat their lower-rated opponents. International Master Hayk M. Martirosyan surprised everyone after beating Sergei Azarov, a Belarusian chess grandmaster. In Round 2 slated for March 2, the 16-year-old Armenian chess player will face Israeli chess grandmaster Boris Gelfand. Tigran L. Petrosyan and Robert Hovhannisyan will compete with Alexander Moiseenko (Ukraine) and Alexey Goganov (Russia) respectively.
