The cooperation between the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun is not aimed at protecting the interests of ordinary people. Political analyst Stepan Safaryan says the aim of the coalition government formed on the threshold of the 2017 parliamentary elections is not to keep the promises given to people. “Coalitions are usually forced before elections and not after them,” he said adding that this coalition will not differ from the previous ones. “Generally, all political forces that form a coalition with the HHK will have to follow strict rules [dictated by the HHK] .In fact, the HHK retains its dominant position in the political domain which always dictates its conditions to other forces.” The political analyst says Dashnaktsutyun’s claims that by forming a coalition government with the ‘discredited’ Republicans they aim to change the quality of government is not a convincing reason. He says Dashnaktsutyun only seeks to take seats in the next parliament. “The quality is changed when the government has no other choice but to meet halfway with the political force it is going to form a majority with,” Mr Safaryan said. We have also asked our citizens’ opinion on HHK-Dashnaktsutyun tandem. Most of them expressed the same opinion on the ongoing discussions between the two forces. “Nothing has changed. They are playing their old games. Had they wanted to make real changes, they would have done it during these years,” they said. “The HHK lacks legitimacy; therefore it is forming a coalition government while Dashnaks want to have seats in parliament,” said a Yerevan resident.
