Live discussion: Cancer Prevalence in Armenia (video)

January 29, 2016, at 12:00, Yerevan, Armenia: The Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR), in cooperation with the Public Journalism Club (PJC) and the Media Center, is hosting a discussion on cancer prevalence in Armenia. Recent data published by World Life Expectancy, a global health data base, has caused controversy and concern in Armenia´s media and among the public.  In a ranking of 172 countries, based on 2014 data, Armenia came in first as having the world´s highest cancer mortality rate.  But government officials deny the data is relevant. Statistically, windpipe, lung, throat, prostate, stomach and colon cancers are most common among men in Armenia, while women are mostly affected by breast, uterine, cervical and colon cancer. IWPR and PJC initiated a panel discussion to address the issue of cancer prevalence in Armenia. The event will cover cancer and current trends of the disease in Armenia as well as disease prevention, public awareness and strengths and weaknesses of the country´s healthcare system. The speakers of the Yerevan event include: Aleksandr Bazarchyan, Deputy Director of the National Health Institute Grigor Badalyan, President of the Association of Armenian Oncologists Artur Avetisyan, Clinical Director of the National Center of Oncology Khachanush Hakobyan, Executive Director oftheArmenianAmerican Wellness Center Hovhannes Vardanyan, Head of the Radiology Department at the ArmenianAmerican Wellness Center The panel discussion will be broadcast live on media-center.am and www.a1plus.am.
