Trees cut down near territory of Tsitsernakaberd (video)
Starting from the morning trees have been cut down in the territory of the Genocide Memorial, near Sports and Concert Complex.
The residents alarmed and we arrived at the site. Near the territory of the Memorial about ten workers were cutting down the trees and then putting into the cars.
On seeing the camera of “A1+” the workers stopped their work for several minutes. In reply to the question, why the trees were being cut down, they only noted that they had been instructed to do that work and they carried out it. In the upper part of the park Armen Harutyunyan, who introduced himself as an agronomist, noted, “These are dry trees, these are simple sanitary activities. We must cut down trees until the end of the month.”
In another part Smbat Manukyan, Deputy Director of the Genocide Memorial, was following the activities. “They are cleaning the territory, these are high trees, which must be pruned,” he said.
In reply to the question, who gave the instruction, Mr. Manukyan said, “The Municipality is aware of it based on the instruction of the assistant manager. All the unnecessary trees of the territory must be pruned. It will continue until December 10.”
To the remark that the residents are concerned that something wrong is done in terms of nature protection, the Deputy Director replied, “There is no violation. It is a park and not a forest to leave every bush or tree. We don’t cut down sound trees. It is done once every 4-5 years.”
To note, there are rumors that the territory is being cleaned in order to build a hotel or casino. After the sale of the Complex it was officially noted that it isn’t excluded that a place of entertainment may be built in the territory.
