Armenian authorities are enslaved by the Venice Commission, Sos Gimishyan, Chairman of the Christian-Democratic Revival Party, said today addressing Republican lawmaker Lernik Alexanyan during a debate on the pending constitutional changes. “You have a wrong opinion of the Venice Commission,” Alexanyan said. “Defend them as much as you can! You are doing the right thing! They pay you and you defend them,” Gimishyan continued his accusations. His words angered the Republican MP who said, “Whom do they pay? They pay people like you who are driving better cars than me.” Surprised by the statement, Sos Gimishyan said, “I do not have a car. I have come here in a taxi. Would you like me to give you my flat and property in return of your car?” “Why not? Let us exchange them but do not go to extremes,” was Alexanyan’s reply. Speaking about the planned transition from a semi-presidential system to a parliamentary system of government, Sos Gimishyan said the system of government did not matter to him. “The Constitution cannot solve the most acute and urgent problems faced by the country. The authorities repeatedly say that the current Constitution did not work but they do not explain why it failed to work. This one will not work either because it is even worse than the Constitution proposed by [former president] Robert Kocharyan,” he said.
