He painted the orchards, yards, houses and markets of Yerevan, but the village and the nature of his homeland were his creative passion.  The retrospective of canvases of great master of landscape painting Sedrak Arakelyan has been opened at the National Gallery of Armenia. Painting, graphics, etudes and sketches- about 150 works. Sedrak Arakelyan is one of the founders of Soviet Armenian painting. He was born in 1884 in Jauk village of Nakhichevan. He studied at Fine Art Colleges of Tbilisi and Moscow. His art was shaped under the influence of his teacher Yeghishe Tadevosyan and Russian realist painting. Sedrak Arakelyan’s works are exhibited at the National Gallery of Yerevan, Moscow Tretyakov Gallery and personal collections. By the way, five years ago the Academy of Fine Arts donated several dozen forgotten paintings to the National Gallery, which had been found during the repair activities at the academy’s library, behind the bookshelves. The preparatory activities of the exhibition lasted for three years. Most of the canvases have been exhibited for the first time including “Sasna Davit”, which was reborn. The exhibition will be open until December 30.
