Major global confrontations are taking place these days, with the sides trying to maintain leverages against each other, a member of the Karabakh Committee told media on Sept. 28 speaking about the latest border skirmishes. Ashot Manucharyan says Russia is not interested in the conflict escalation, while its rivals want to keep the situation tense [on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border] as ‘it is in the outskirts of Russia.’ Each case must be investigated separately. On both sides, there are people who do not obey the authorities. In general, Russia is to blame for border tensions but not this time: interests in the region are changing all the time. On the other hand, Turkey has weakened its influence on Azerbaijan. Turkey is now flooded with Islamist representatives of special services, who openly express their opinions. Russia is fighting two wars at a time – one with Syria and the other with Ukraine and if it starts a third war it will be chocked. Therefore, I say Russia is not interested in the escalation of the Karabakh conflict,” Mr Manucharyan said. He says Armenia announced long ago that if Azerbaijan attacks Nagorno-Karabakh, it [Armenia] will recognise the NKR independence and protect its borders. The member of the Karabakh Committee says it is time to mobilize people. “Still two years ago, freedom fighters signaled that big changes were in the region while our officials were looting the country. We are witnessing the same situation today. I blame the tensions on the border on our authorities and our people. People are guilty as they do not fight against the authorities. If we were fortunate enough we would have authorities addicted to drugs instead of a leadership addicted to money: money strongly influences them and they want to have everything they see. The entire political spectrum is lettered with the same people. I am sorry for speaking in such a way about the country’s leadership. Ashot Manucharyan says no one in Azerbaijan and Armenia is eager to resolve the conflict while the peoples of the two countries are overexhausted. “I do not know how long the tense situation will last but I do not think that it can lead to war. If war breaks out, it will mean that it has been agreed upon with Russia.”
