Armenian people will never lose their independence, Armenia’s first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan said on Sept.21. “Yes, today, as one of our classics said, the atmosphere is dreadfully close but the stuffiness will fade away. I do doubt that the bandit regime will step down one day. Of course, the sooner they do it, the better for the people, it will happen sooner or later, do not have any doubts,” Levon Ter-Petrosyan said during a reception held at the office of All-Armenian National Movement (HHSh). The first president did not want to speak about the package of constitutional reform, noting that it was a negative reform. “I know that you expected to hear a different thing from me because an important event is happening in Armenia nowadays. I am speaking about the attempt to change the Constitution. Everyone has been speaking about it in recent days except for me. I did not express an opinion because I think that my friends are doing their work excellently in parliament,” said the leader of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK). “In the fight against the so-called constitutional aednments I would like to emphasize the restless efforts of Aram Manukyan, Levon Zurabyan, Gagik Jhangiryan as well as clear-cut and courageous position of Stepan Demirtchyan,” he added. What we are witnessing today is the birth of a new constitution, he stressed. “They have put aside the old constitution and are now trying to adopt a new one. This is a new constitution, which destroys the foundations of our country,” Levon Ter-Petrosyan said in conclusion.
