Our future is not lost as long as we have such youth, writer David Gasparyan said on Monday speaking about the ongoing protests against rising electricity prices. “I am proud of our young people as they neither politicize the issue nor turn the protest site into a Maidan,” he said. The writer thinks the government has to listen to these young people and solve the problem. “I believe that the authorities have an option. Are they so powerless against Bibin [Head of the Electric Networks of Armenia] who does not even attend parliamentary hearings? This is the most important issue to be discussed now,” he said. Painter Haghtanak Shahumyan is also proud of the young people protesting in Baghramyan Avenue.  “I am not an economist but I understand that if there is something [energy] that a country can produce but does not do it and buys the product from another country, it means importers impose their will on our economy,” he said. Mr Shahumyan considers Bibin’s appearance in Armenia suspicious. “”Russia is unable to restore its economy today and we bring to Armenia a manager who is ignored in Russia to commit fraud here. Why hasn’t the man [Bibin] been tested until now?” Sculptor Ferdinand Arakelyan says the problems stemming from the Electric networks of Armenia are not new: people have been robbed for 25 years. “The political way of finding a solution has always let to an abyss of ignorance. Instead of changing the coachman we need to change the coach. Who says that Bibin was alone in robbing our people? There are so many people with surnames ending in “yan” who did the same.” David Gasparyan says there is only one way out of the situation. “You cannot cheat and humiliate people so much. What does it mean to give electricity to Italy, energy to Russia and cognac to France? The issue will be solved when everything is returned to our people.”
