Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s special letter with first stamp (video)

The first stamp of the third Republic of Armenia was imprinted on the envelope, in which there was a letter of President Levon Ter-Petrosyan to Catholicos of All Armenians Vazgen I. 23 years ago on May 28, 1992 the stamp, which was called “Independence Day”, was put into circulation. The author of the stamp depicting Biblical Mount Ararat and the tricolor was the artist Harutyun Samuelyan, whose version was recognized the best among more than 400 works. The letter was taken to Etchmiadzin by a symbolic stagecoach. Minister of Transport and Communications, the author of the stamp and other officials were in the retinue. The first stamp of the Republic of Armenia was printed in London in 100000 copies with the support of philanthropists from Armenian Diaspora. By the way, in 1992 when the first stamp of Armenia was put into circulation, the first stamp in the world “Black penny” was sold at Zurich auction for 690 thousand francs. The English stamp depicting Queen Victoria was called “Black penny”, as it was printed in black paint and cost one penny.
