Live Discussion: Need for Anti-Discrimination Law and Manifestations of Discrimination in Armenia (video)

On May 25th at 12:00 the Institute for War and Peace Reporting Armenia Branch, in cooperation with the Public Journalism Club and its project Media Center, will hold “Need for Anti-Discrimination Law and Manifestations of Discrimination in Armenia” discussion (Address: 30 Saryan Street). Sergei Gabrielyan, head of Nor Serund (New Generation) humanitarian NGO, Arman Sahakyan, member of Nor Serund NGO, Maro Khachaturyan, lawyer of Arman Sahakyan, Hasmik Harutyunyan, expert of the Protection of Rights without Borders NGO; and Isabella Sargsyan, Program Director at Eurasia Partnership Foundation will take part in the discussion. Hovhannes Galajyan, editor of the Iravunk newspaper, has been invited to take part in the discussion. On May 14, the Court of General Jurisdiction of First Instance of Kentron and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts found against the Iravunk newspaper in a case brought by three individuals who alleged that it had made defamatory and discriminatory comments about them in an article published on May 17, 2014. On May 22 the complete text of the court verdict was published. According to it newspaper's editor and author of the article is to apologize and pay a damage of 300,000 drams to each plaintiff. Currently, Armenia lacks a separate anti-discrimination law. The Ministry of Justice is discussing the adoption of an anti-discrimination law and how urgent it is now for the country.
