Armenia’s Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan today presented [at the National Assembly] the 2014 annual report on the activities of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Before presenting the report, Mr Kostanyan stressed that justice, specifically criminal justice, cannot be viewed on the political level.  The Prosecutor General said that their primary goal is to fight against corruption and unprofessionalism. They also want to enhance the professional qualifications of prosecutors. “They are hard-working, honest and competent specialists who are accumulating experience for our country and its people, otherwise, a specialist simply becomes a technical worker,” he said. Mr Kostanyan stressed that any prosecutor involved in politics should choose between politics and his profession. The Prosecutor General says crimes in the country decreased by 787 in 2014. Then he spoke about people’s reaction to crimes.  “Once a crime is committed people start discussing it without knowing the details, thereby hindering the investigation. No matter how much worried you are, you should also think about the fate of other people, otherwise you may jeopardize the interests of justice. You should also avoid determining the guilty and innocent parties and labeling them,” he said. Mr Kostanyan also referred to the murder of the seven-member Avetisyan family in Gyumri city and the disclosure of the March 2008 bloodshed. The official said he had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the March 1 case. “We shall see to it that justice prevails in the country and everyone is guided by a sense of justice,” he said in conclusion.
