Russia is drawing Turkey into its orbit and if it continues to deepen ties with Turkey, it will lead to the restoration of the Ottoman Empire, says Azat Arshakyan, a former member of the Supreme Council. However, he does not think that this might happen. Commenting on the statement of Kazakhstan's leader Nursultan Nazarbayev who said interest in the Eurasian Economic Union is growing, especially in Turkey, Mr Arshakyan, said it was merely a political stunt. “Why should Turkey that has a population of about 80 000 people seek friendship with Russia?” Then he recalled Serzh Sargsyan’s answer to Nazarbayev’s statement. “Sargsyan said in that case we should start with Iran by restoring the Persian Empire. These are simple political tricks,” Mr Arshakyan said. Garnik Isagulyan, Chairman of the National Security party, who was also present in the press conference, said, in turn, that every year during the May celebrations people wonder whether Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who was Armenia’s President in 1991 was unaware of Shushi liberation during his presidency. “On May 7, I left for Iran together with Ter-Petrosyan. We had a meeting there. Now I am telling you a state secret which I was to hide from you, but I want you to know that Ter-Petrosyan was well aware of Shushi operation but we could not show or speak about it,” he said. Mr Isagulyan added that he was the third person after Levon Ter-Petrosyan to know everything about the operation and how everything happened in fact.  “I was not on good terms with Ter-Petrosyan at that time, but I feel bad when people attempt to distort historical facts and defame the state symbols,” he said.
