On the threshold of European Games, Azerbaijani authorities have decided to introduce restrictions on journalists who have applied to cover the multi-sport event and are best known for ‘their pro-Armenian stance,” contact.az reports citing “Yeni Musavat” newspaper. “Azerbaijani authorities decided to revise the list of journalists accredited at the upcoming European Games in Baku, and set limits for those who take a pro-Armenian and unfriendly attitude towards Azerbaijan,” contact.az writes. Nearly 700 international and more than 600 local media representatives have applied for accreditation to cover the first European Games in Baku. The newspaper also said that the Azerbaijani authorities are studying the publications about Azerbaijan by journalists with ‘dubious reputation’ and exploring ‘possible’ communications with international human rights organizations, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. The newspaper does not report the source of such information, claiming that the talk is about journalists from Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Belgium, Norway and Sweden. “It is expected that these journalists will not be allowed to cover the Games, so the organizing committee intends to revoke their accreditation,” says the newspaper. Contact.az contacted the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry to verify the information but the latter did not confirm the report.
