Women subjected to sexual abuse keep silent

Sixty-three cases of sexual assault on minor girls were reported Armenia in 2014 against the 13 cases registered in 2013, deputy head of the Armenian Police Department of Juvenile Affairs Artur Vardanyan said during a discussion at the Media Centre. David Tumasyan, a senior investigator at the Investigative Department, accounted the decline in sexual violence for the recently amended Criminal Code which foresees harsher punishments on sex offenses against minors. “People used minors to satisfy their sexual needs knowing that they would have to pay only a fine,” he stressed. Tatevik Aghabekyan, a programs manager at the Sexual Assault Crisis Center, added in turn that cases involving sexual abuse of minors are reported to relevant centres while adult women prefer to remain silent or withdrew the report immediately after writing.
